Ukrainian air defence effectively adapts to Russian strikes — ISW

The successful disabling of over 20 enemy missiles by Ukrainian air defense forces through the application of electronic warfare means underscores the implementation of innovative technologies to counter Russian missile strikes.

This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War.

The report highlighted that during the recent large-scale attack, the Ukrainian military utilized «active countermeasures via electronic warfare» to neutralize more than 20 missiles. Experts at ISW observed that this represents a demonstration of Ukraine’s electronic warfare capabilities, traditionally associated with disabling Russian drones, now being applied against missile systems.

Furthermore, the report acknowledges that ISW had previously evaluated Russia’s missile attacks on Ukraine and Ukraine’s adaptation to counter Russia’s new strike systems as part of a broader tactical and technological race between offensive and defensive forces, involving long-range aviation and air defense capabilities.

According to the ISW report, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ignat pointed out that the Russian strike package used on January 13 resembled the one deployed by Russian forces on January 8 and in previous recent strikes. This observation suggests that Ukrainian forces can discern patterns in repeated Russian strike packages, enabling them to innovate and adapt accordingly.
