Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, engaged in discussions with Somalia’s Acting Foreign Minister, Ali Omar, regarding the situation involving Ukrainians who were captured in Somalia.
Minister Kuleba shared this information on the social media platform Twitter.
«I spoke with Acting Foreign Minister of Somalia Ali Omar about the situation with Ukrainian citizens captured in Somalia and ways to resolve it».
He further revealed that both parties have agreed to sign a memorandum for the establishment of diplomatic relations. Kuleba expressed optimism by stating:
«When this happens, there will not be a single African country with which Ukraine has not established diplomatic relations«
He added that the discussions also encompassed strategies to enhance cooperation between Ukraine and the African Union.
In a related development, it was reported that on January 12, anti-government forces in Somalia seized a UN mission helicopter that subsequently crashed, carrying four Ukrainians and five foreigners. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured that the identities of the captured individuals have been identified, and the situation is under special control.
