The US Supreme Court has ruled that Donald Trump is eligible to run for president, overturning a decision by a Colorado court. The ongoing election race sees Trump maintaining confidence among Republicans, while Joe Biden remains popular among Democrats, as indicated by the primary results.
Oleksandr Krayev, an expert at the Foreign Policy Council «Ukrainian Prism», discussed this on Hromadske Radio.
«There are many interesting aspects. The Supreme Court did not prohibit Trump’s removal but ruled that only Congress can determine whether the 14th Amendment should be applied to Trump. This implies that Trump could still be removed from the election, pending a decision by Congress», — Krayev explained.
Democrats have announced their intention to draft and submit a bill to Congress for Trump’s removal.
«In the parliamentary history of the United States, Congress has never made such a decision, and there is no precedent for applying the 14th Amendment to a person already running for office. It was originally intended as a precautionary amendment to prevent people from running for office. However, it’s worth noting that the chances of this amendment passing quickly and being properly considered are quite low. This is because we have a pro-Republican House of Representatives, led by Mike Johnson, a committed Trumpist. Additionally, the Democratic majority in the Senate is relatively small, so although a bill will be proposed, the chances of its passage are quite low», — the expert opined.
On March 5, the United States observed Super Tuesday, with primaries held in 15 states and the American Samoa.
«As expected, Biden secured victories in all 15 states and one overseas territory, performing quite well. Despite the fact that voters still have some doubts about him, almost 80% of Democrats say Biden is too old for the job. As expected, Trump gained an absolute majority and demonstrated great confidence. However, he faced some challenges, with Nikki Haley winning Vermont. She remains in the race and is determined to continue fighting. Furthermore, over half of the Republicans voting for Trump indicated that he is simply the most popular candidate within the party, suggesting they are open to choosing someone capable of leading their party to power», — Krayev stated.
The fate of the aid packages for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan remains unresolved.
«As before, aid for Ukraine is contingent on the federal budget and the situation at the border. The federal budget is still pending adoption, remaining interim until the 22nd. Once clarity emerges regarding the federal budget and the border situation, a vote will be held to provide assistance to Ukraine. Those delaying it, namely the Trumpists, are starting to experience consequences. The inability to pass the US federal budget triggers a gradual decline in the markets, impacting the US economy. Consequently, ordinary Americans who believed the Trumpists are now realizing the developing crisis is the result of their actions. Therefore, regardless of Mike Johnson’s efforts, the issue of our support will inevitably be put to a vote, given its importance to the American economy», — the expert asserted.
