Peace in Ukraine means ensuring that Russia will never be able to occupy Ukraine, but NATO membership is not a prerequisite for this.
This was stated by US President Joe Biden, as quoted by TIME.
Biden was answering a question about how he sees peace in Ukraine after the Russian-Ukrainian war.
“Peace looks like a guarantee that Russia will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever occupy Ukraine. This is what peace looks like. And it does not mean NATO, (that) they are part of NATO…
It means that we have the same relationship with them as we do with other countries where we supply weapons so that they can defend themselves in the future. But … I was the one who said that I was not ready to support the NATOization of Ukraine», — the White House chief said.
He recalled the times when he visited Ukraine as a senator and vice president: “There was a lot of corruption there. It was a circumstance that really weighed on everything.”
At the same time, Biden emphasized that the West should not allow Ukraine’s defeat, as this would mean instability for all countries along the border of Russia, the Balkans, and Belarus. He also denied the idea that NATO is on a slippery slope to war with Russia by helping Ukraine.
“No, we will be on a slippery slope to war if we do nothing for Ukraine», — the US president emphasized.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO allies should review the restrictions imposed on the use of weapons provided to Ukraine at the national level.
