Greece plans to decommission 32 F-16 Block-30 fighters and transfer them to Ukraine.
This was reported by Aljazeera.
Greece plans to upgrade its F-16 aircraft to Block-70. In addition, the US Congressional Committee has authorized the country to purchase up to 40 fifth-generation F-35 multi-role fighters.
Greece believes it is better to send the old planes to the United States for modernization and then transfer them to Ukraine rather than write them off.
However, some military experts say that the transfer of these aircraft is being held back by the security situation, which could create «a big gap in the country’s air force.»
«Unfortunately, because of our neighbors, we are obliged to have powerful armed forces. The sale of 32 F-16s will create a big gap in the air force. There should be a quorum of about 200 aircraft, which is impossible to achieve with more modern and expensive fighters», — a source told Aljazeera.
