EU extends sanctions against Russia for 6 months

The European Union has extended sanctions against Russia for its aggression against Ukraine for another 6 months, until January 31, 2025.

This was reported on the website of the EU Council.

“Today, the Council extended the EU’s restrictive measures in response to the ongoing actions of the Russian Federation destabilizing the situation in Ukraine for another 6 months, until January 31, 2025.

These sanctions, first introduced in 2014, have been significantly extended since February 2022 in response to Russia’s unprovoked, unjustified, and illegal military aggression against Ukraine.»

Currently, the sanctions include restrictions on trade, finance, technology and dual-use goods, industry, transportation, and luxury goods. They also include:

• a ban on the import or transfer by sea of crude oil and certain oil products from Russia to the EU;
• de-SWIFTing of several Russian banks;
• suspension of broadcasting and broadcasting licenses in the EU of several disinformation media outlets supported by the Kremlin.

The EU Council website also states that all necessary measures will remain in force as long as Russia continues its unlawful use of force:

“It is appropriate to maintain all measures taken by the EU and to take additional measures if necessary.»
