On the evening of September 3, Russian forces carried out an airstrike on one of the university buildings in the city of Sumy. A 64-year-old security guard was injured.
Alyona Yatsyna, journalist and co-founder of Kordon.media, discussed the aftermath of the shelling and the security situation in the Sumy region during a live broadcast on Hromadske Radio.
«In the morning, more damage became visible after the shelling. One of the university buildings was partially destroyed», — Yatsyna reported.
She noted that the damaged university is the biggest in the region. The targeted building suffered extensive damage. All floors in the building were destroyed and many windows shattered in nearby university buildings.
As for the injured security guard, Yatsyna stated that he sustained minor injuries and was not hospitalized. She also mentioned that all education in the city and region is now being conducted online.
«Since the start of the operation in Kursk Region, the air raid alarms have been lasting a day or more», — Yatsyna added.
Sumy Region has recently been targeted with rockets, anti-aircraft missiles, and «Shahed» drones, whereas earlier it was mostly artillery and mortar fire.
«Yesterday, the Russians targeted energy workers with an FPV drone while they were working on the network. There was also an incident where the occupiers hit the cab of a train driver, injuring the driver’s assistant», — Yatsyna shared.
Over 10 guided bombs were dropped on the region overnight. One of these bombs hit the city of Sumy, but there is currently no information about casualties. Another bomb hit a nearby Sumy community, though contact with this community has not yet been established to assess the damage.
On the afternoon of September 1, Russian forces dropped three guided aerial bombs on Sumy. The attack damaged an industrial enterprise, an administrative building, and three vehicles, injuring a 42-year-old employee. The Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that two industrial enterprises in the city were affected.
«According to the investigation, on September 1, 2024, around 3:30 p.m., the enemy used methods of warfare prohibited by international law, dropping three guided aerial bombs on the city of Sumy. As a result, an industrial enterprise, including a production and storage facility, an administrative building, and three vehicles were damaged. A 42-year-old employee was injured», — the Prosecutor’s Office stated.
A pre-trial investigation has been initiated under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, concerning violations of the laws and customs of war.
Additionally, the enemy targeted an educational institution in Sumy, which houses a center for social and psychological rehabilitation of children and an orphanage.
«In the evening of September 1, the enemy launched a rocket attack on the premises of the Sumy educational institution, where a center for social and psychological rehabilitation of children and an orphanage are located», —the Sumy regional administration reported.
They emphasized that the educational institution is located in the middle of a residential neighborhood of the city.
