In memory of UCU student Daria Bazylewycz, her mother Yevheniia, and her sisters Yaryna and Emilia, the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) is launching a sustainable scholarship fund (endowment). This is done in collaboration with the father of the family Yaroslav Bazylewycz and the National Scouting Organisation of Ukraine, Plast. The goal is to raise $100,000.
According to the UCU press service on September 25, this scholarship fund will enable students to receive scholarships annually. According to UCU the idea of the fund is:
“To follow the ideals and principles that the Bazylewycz sisters and their mother demonstrated through their lives. All of them were also active members of Plast.»
As reported, on the night of September 4, during a massive missile attack in Lviv, UCU student Daria Bazylewycz, her two sisters Yaryna and Emilia, and their mother Yevhenia were killed. Of all the family members, only her father, Yaroslav Bazylewycz, survived. The mother and her daughters were killed while they were in the stairwell of their home. There they were hiding during the air raid.
“I was the richest, happiest husband and father: I had a treasure, and I always understood that having such a wife and such responsible, hardworking, beautiful, intelligent, proactive, and patriotic children was a true blessing. I was always proud of them and will continue to be. They had everything ahead of them—each of them. In an instant, I lost the diversity of feelings that all four of them, each in their own way, had given me during our life together. Today, I have the best, happiest, most beautiful memories—everything else has been amputated! So I ask everyone to help me create a sustainable scholarship fund in the name of Yevheniia, Yaryna, Daria, and Emilia Bazylewycz, so that the world remembers their names», — said Yaroslav Bazylewycz, presenting the idea of establishing the scholarship fund.
The goal of the fundraiser is to raise $100,000 to create a sustainable scholarship fund (endowment). This endowment will enable the generation of a scholarship each year in memory of Yevheniia, Yaryna, Daria, and Emilia Bazylewycz. This initiative will help the university cover the educational costs for talented students who, due to difficult life circumstances, are unable to afford their education.

According to UCU, the tradition of endowments is common in many universities in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Establishing a scholarship fund allows us to preserve and honor the memory of a person. Consequently, with the outbreak of full-scale war, UCU has established 10 scholarship funds in honor of military personnel—students and graduates of the university—who have died in the conflict.
