Andriy Kulykov

Andriy graduated from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with a degree in International Relations in 1979. Faced, however, with little opportunity to conduct work in his own field of expertise, Andriy turned to writing articles for the Kyiv Newspaper - The News from Ukraine. He continued writing for 13 years and eventually became a reporter, and then head of department and deputy chief editor. Andriy discovered the radio world for himself at the age of 14 when his grandmother, Nina Savitskaya (Ukrainian radio anchor), would turn on radio programs in the Belarussian language. The enthusiasm instilled within Andriy during those early years surely remained, as he eventually became the senior producer of BBC radio’s Ukrainian service program in 1992. In 1996, Andriy would try out a career in TV business. He started working at IMC Internews in Kyiv, then at Television News Service on the 1+1 channel and on the Novy Channel. In 2000 he created the program Night Drama, for his author Nichna Dramaturgia, on the channel STB, after which he returned to the BBC’s Ukrainian service. Andriy began to work on a variety of different initiatives, including hosting the show Svoboda Slova (Freedom of Speech) on ICTV channel and the author of the music program Pory roku (Seasons) on Radio Era FM. He is also an expert on the EU project Development of Media Skills and a lecturer at both the Kyiv Institute of Journalism and the Mariupol State University. A multiple prize winner of the famous Teletriumph award, Andriy has been recognized for his work both as a TV-host and as a team member of the political talk show Svoboda Slova (Freedom of Speech). In 2013 Andriy became one of the founders of “Hromadske Radio”. Today, he remains a Chairman and is dedicated to the further development and success of Hromadske radio.

Besides a deep dedication for news media, Andriy has vast experience in literature and literary translations, having authored many works and translations from Russian to Ukrainian and from Ukrainian to English. He translated an art history monograph of the famous Ukrainian scholar Olga Petrova into English. Andriy participated in the recording of the album ‘70/80: Classic Rock in Ukrainian style’ by Kyiv band Kamyanyj Hist. It was Andriy who translated the famous song ‘Coz I Love U’ by Slade into Ukrainian. Andriy writes and publishes semi-scientific articles as Andron Dovgotelesy. Sometimes, he writes under the pseudonym Andrei Savitsky (in memory of his grandmother). Andriy’s dream is to be an entertainer, and has dedicated great effort to make his dream come true.
