An all-Ukrainian referendum will finally resolve the compromises in the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Citizens of Ukraine will have the chance to respond to compromises made regarding security guarantees, the temporarily occupied territories of Donbas and Crimea, said President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with the Suspilne News.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine understands that it will not be taken into NATO because NATO fears Russia. He added that, “we need to stay calm and say ‘okay then give us other security guarantees’”.
“There are NATO members which want to be guarantors of security, which, unfortunately, does not guarantee 100% that we will be given NATO membership, but they are ready to do all that the Alliance should do were we a member of the Alliance. And I think it is a normal compromise,” said Zelensky.
According to Zelensky security issues will concern constitutional amendments and changes to current Ukrainian legislation.
“I explained to all negotiating groups: when you talk about all these changes, and they may be historic, will will eventually have a referendum. The people needs to have a say and needs to decide on the formats of compromise. The compromises that they will decide on are on the matters negotiated between Ukraine and Russia. Therefore, no matter the circumstances, I am ready to do anything that the people decide,” said Zelensky.
