Russian occupying forces are confiscating and destroying library books, primarily historical and fictional literature that contradicts Kremlin’s propaganda in Luhansk, Donetsk, Chernihiv, and Sumy oblasts, reports the Chief Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
Russian “military police” are tasked with preforming “ideological functions”, that now include the destruction of books.
«Books about the history of Ukrainians Maidan, anti-terrorist operation/environmental protection, and Ukrainian liberation struggles are of the greatest interest to the police. Extremist literature includes school textbooks on Ukrainian history, scientific and popular historical literature,» the statement said.
The agency adds that the Russian military has formed a list of names now banned from use. This list includes Mazepa, Petliura, Bandera, Shukhevych and Chornovil.
The seizure «The Case of Vasyl Stus» by journalist Vakhtang Kipiani, specifically, has been reported in multiple cities including Kreminna and Rubizhne in the Luhansk region and Hrodna in Chernihiv region.
When a banned book is found it is destroyed on the spot or confiscated.
