Ukraine should to go to the EU and NATO in a few years – Ohryzko
Over the next few years, Ukraine must follow the path that other countries have taken for decades on the path to the EU and NATO, said Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Volodymyr Ohryzko on Hromadske Radio.
«June is becoming a defining month, because at stake are the things that are of archival importance to Ukraine. And without exaggeration, they will determine what will happen in our country in the coming years. We do not have decades to walk this path. We have to do in a few years what will finally determine our place under the global safe sun. In other words, we have to go from candidate to full membership in the European Union in the next few years, and the same applies to full membership in NATO, ”Ogryzko said.
He noted that other forms of security and economic solutions are unacceptable for Ukraine, because they make our country a secondary country.
«I think Macron and Scholz will promote it. But we have to ask the question roughly. We have every right to do so, because we use our blood to protect their safety. Therefore, we should ask about becoming part of their security, not a form that cannot protect us, «the former diplomat stressed.
He added that the decision of the European Council on Ukraine’s candidacy for EU membership will send a strong signal.
The European Commission is expected to publish its assessment on June 24 on whether Ukraine should be granted EU candidate status. EU leaders will consider granting the status at a summit on June 23-24.
Earlier, the European Parliament adopted a resolution recommending that the European Union grant Ukraine candidate status. MEPs also expressed their position on weapons for Ukraine.
The resolution concerns the foreign, security and defense policy of the EU after the beginning of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The document was adopted at a plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday, June 8. 438 MEPs voted for her, 65 voted against, another 94 abstained.
Ukraine sent the first part of the EU membership application to the European Commission in mid-April. The second part of the questionnaire was completed on May 9.
66% of Europeans support Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
An exchange is needed to return the Azovstal troops home.
