Ukraine has deployed the FrankenSAM air defense system for the first time, successfully destroying a «Shahed» at a distance of 9 km

On the night of January 17, the Ukrainian military employed the FrankenSAM air defense system for the first time, successfully destroying a Shahed target at a distance of 9 kilometers. Oleksandr Kamyshin, the head of the Ministry of Strategic Industries, made this announcement during a briefing in Davos.

Kamyshin further mentioned that all FrankenSAM air defense systems have been fully deployed on the battlefield. The FrankenSAM project is a collaborative effort between the Pentagon, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, and the Ministry of Strategic Industries. It combines three distinct anti-aircraft missile systems:

  1. Soviet «Buk» air defense system with US RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missiles.
  2. AIM-9M air-to-air missiles in combination with Soviet radars.
  3. Air defense systems based on Ukrainian old systems with Patriot components and missiles.

As a reminder, in October 2023, the Pentagon reported a successful test of the FrankenSAM air defense system.
