Ukraine is switching to F-16s on an emergency basis — Ihnat

Ukraine is in the process of urgently transitioning to F-16 fighter jets, and while the exact timeline remains uncertain, efforts are underway to expedite the arrival of these aircraft.

Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, highlighted ongoing preparations:

«Pilots are undergoing retraining, infrastructure is being adjusted, temporary shelters are being constructed, and runways are being improved in certain locations. Given the wartime circumstances, constructing extensive infrastructure for the F-16 in alignment with NATO requirements may not be feasible immediately. However, the aircraft can still operate from existing facilities. The exact timeline for Ukraine to acquire F-16s remains uncertain, but efforts are underway to expedite the process», — as quoted by Ukrinform

Ihnat acknowledged that the emergency switch to F-16s is unprecedented globally, emphasizing the need for realistic expectations. He noted that the arrival of F-16s does not guarantee instant victory, cautioning that Russia will react to Ukraine’s new capabilities. The initial deployment will involve a small group of pilots, and the gradual process of training and increasing pilot numbers will unfold over time.

The spokesperson clarified that Ukraine will not receive a large number of aircraft all at once, nor will they be the latest modifications. However, the training process is in motion, with pilots already conducting flights under accelerated programs. The objective is for Ukrainian pilots to master the aircraft, including independent flights without instructors. Training covers a range of tactical techniques, from intercepting air targets to striking ground and surface targets.

Despite the urgency, Ukraine has a well-defined action plan for the training of pilots and engineers. Recent reports indicate that the Netherlands plans to supply Ukraine with an additional six F-16 fighters.
