Recent interview with Kurt Volker on «Ukraine Calling» shed light on the progress and challenges regarding the much-awaited $60 billion aid package for Ukraine in the U.S. Congress. Former U.S. special representative for Ukraine negotiations, expressed confidence in the package’s eventual approval despite setbacks.

Volker, in an interview with Brian Bonner, emphasized bipartisan support for aid to Ukraine, with approximately 80% of both Republicans and Democrats in favor. However, delays in passing the aid were attributed not to concerns over Ukraine but rather to the contentious issue of border security, currently a focal point of political debate in the United States.

While optimistic about the aid’s passage, Volker underscored the need for a clear commitment from the Biden administration to support Ukraine’s efforts to combat Russian aggression. He criticized the absence of a definitive goal from the administration, stating that specifying Ukraine’s victory over Russian forces as the objective would eliminate constraints on military assistance.

«It will take the Biden administration deciding that they want Ukraine to win the war. Everything you hear is, we will stand with Ukraine as long as it takes. We’ll provide assistance. We’ll provide economic support. But you never hear the clear goal: «We want Ukraine to defeat Russian forces in Ukraine, period». Because if you had that clear goal, you wouldn’t put limits on the equipment» — he stated.

Volker warned of the grave threat posed by Russia’s expansionist ambitions, citing their disregard for the sovereignty of neighboring nations and the ruthless tactics employed in Ukraine. He urged the U.S. and its allies to take the situation seriously, given the implications for European security and NATO treaty commitments.
