Sievierodonetsk, currently under Russian occupation in the Luhansk region, houses approximately 15,000 local residents alongside around 15,000 «newcomers». Before the onset of active hostilities, the city’s population stood at 150,000.

Roman Vlasenko, head of the Sievierodonetsk District Military Administration, disclosed this information during an interview on Hromadske Radio.

«Roughly half of Sievierodonetsk’s current population comprises locals. Overall, the city’s population isn’t very substantial. During the height of hostilities, the Severodonetsk district successfully coordinated evacuations, prompting many to leave. People departed via bus, train, and private transport. I estimate that approximately 15,000 individuals from Sievierodonetsk remain, alongside an influx of around 15,000 migrant workers, Russian soldiers, and their families. In total, there are likely just over 30,000 people in Sievierodonetsk now», — stated Roman Vlasenko.

On June 25, 2022, Ukrainian troops withdrew from Sievierodonetsk, which was ravaged by Russian forces. The city subsequently fell under Russian occupation.
