Political expert: Security agreement between Ukraine and the EU is an attempt to fix long-term relations

The Security Agreement signed by Ukraine and the European Union on June 27 is an attempt to cement a long-term relationship. This document is significant for both Ukraine and the European community.

Oleksandr Solontai, Director of Practical Policy Programmes at the Institute of Political Education, stated this on Hromadske Radio.

Commenting on the signing of the security agreement between Ukraine and the EU, he emphasized that this is a special agreement with several differences from those Kyiv signs separately with individual countries.

«The EU is a fundamental economic union from which we receive increasing resources and which we aspire to join… Of course, this is a special agreement.

It is also an agreement to reduce dependence on the politicians who govern the European Union and change over time. This is an attempt to establish a long-term relationship in terms of both alliance and independence,» — Solontai said.

At the same time, he noted that «this is a unique document for the EU itself,» as it has extensive experience in enlargement, but «the experience of signing and implementing documents to jointly defend, jointly help in security, and jointly protect European values is quite limited.»

«Ukraine is unique in this regard. Ukraine is the first country in the world to actively fight for the values of the European Union, and it started back in 2014,» — the Hromadske Radio source said.

As a reminder, on June 27, the European Union approved a negotiation framework for Ukraine, and accession negotiations have already begun.
