The first group of convicts released from custody to serve in the Defense Forces is already undergoing military training, which will last for at least two months. These mobilized men will be sent to the front line by the end of the summer.
Minister of Justice Denys Malyuska shared this information in an interview with the Financial Times.
According to the minister, about 2,872 prisoners were released from custody for mobilization out of 5,196 who requested it. Refusals were given to 368 people on health grounds.
«There are many good people in the prison system who could be useful at the front. This is a good window of opportunity to start your life anew», — said Malyuska.
As a reminder, on May 17, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a bill that allows the voluntary mobilization of certain categories of prisoners into the Defense Forces. On May 22, the Khmelnytsky City District Court allowed the first two convicts to mobilize. The convicts who agreed to go to the front will serve in assault units.
