Fighting in the Kursk Region of the Russian Federation
The Armed Forces of Ukraine’s offensive in the Kursk region of Russia has been ongoing since August 6. On August 12, Ukraine officially commented on these events for the first time. At that time, Oleksandr Syrsky announced that Ukraine already controls 24 settlements in the Kursk region.
That same evening, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the purpose of the offensive in the Kursk region was to protect Sumy region. According to him, since the beginning of June alone, Russians from the Kursk region have shelled Sumy region more than 2,100 times.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry clarified that Ukraine does not intend to occupy the Russian territory. Kyiv states that the offensive was necessary as Ukraine cannot use weapons from its Western partners to expel Russian forces from the border region.
As of August 19, Ukraine controlled more than 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory. Additionally, on August 15, Ukraine established its first military commandant’s office in the Kursk region.
According to The Sunday Times, UK authorities have decided to be more transparent about the use of weapons provided to Ukraine during the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ offensive in the Kursk region. They confirmed the use of Challenger 2 tanks.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Defence Secretary John Healey are reportedly working to persuade key allies to increase their support for Ukraine.
Additionally, Roman Pohorilyi, co-founder of the DeepState project, mentioned on Hromadske Radio that Russians are moving troops to Kursk from areas in Ukraine. These include sectors that are not of strategic or tactical importance to them. For instance, they may withdraw troops from Robotyno or Krynky, but they do not withdraw from Pokrovsk or Toretsk.
