Russians attacked Kyiv hydroelectric power station
The Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Station was damaged during the Russian attack on Ukraine on August 26. Forbes Ukraine reports this, citing a top manager of a state-owned energy company, familiar with the situation and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
According to the publication, on the morning of August 26, the Russians tried to destroy the Kyiv HPP. They used various types of missiles and drones. The attack resulted in hits and damage, as reported by the top manager of the state energy company.
However, there is no threat of a dam breach or critical damage to the plant, he emphasized. Earlier, Ihor Syrota, CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, explained that it is very difficult to destroy the Kyiv HPP. Still, if it were to happen, basements in the Kyiv districts adjacent to the Dnipro could flood, and the drinking water supply might be cut off for some time.
Andriy Kovalenko, director of the Centre for Countering Disinformation, wrote on his Telegram channel that the situation at the Kyiv HPP does not pose a threat, although he did not specify information about any possible destruction. He stressed that the Kyiv HPP was not blown up from the inside like the Kakhovka HPP and that it is impossible to destroy it with missiles.
«There are no threats to the Kyiv HPP dam. It is impossible to destroy it with missiles. We shouldn’t compare it to the Kherson region—there was an explosion from the inside. The Russians are using this topic to stir up panic, nothing more,» Kovalenko explained.
Ukrhydroenergo, the operator of hydroelectric power plants and pumped storage plants, has not yet commented on this information.
Shelling of Ukraine
As a reminder, in the morning, the Russians massively attacked Ukraine with kamikaze drones and various types of missiles, mainly targeting energy facilities. Energy facilities in 15 regions were hit. In the Kyiv region alone, two power facilities were reportedly damaged, but their names have not been officially disclosed.
A drone strike in Lutsk killed one person and destroyed a multi-story building. The city currently has no electricity or water supply.
The Russians also attacked an energy facility in Zaporizhzhia.
It is not yet known how this attack will affect the power supply situation and whether the hourly blackout schedules will be reinstated. Earlier, Ukrenergo resumed selling electricity abroad as the power system situation stabilized. It is also unclear whether such exports will continue.
