Reuters: US close to deal to provide Ukraine with JASSM
The United States is close to reaching an agreement to provide Ukraine with JASSM long-range cruise missiles, which are capable of striking targets deep within Russian territory.
This was stated by Reuters.
“The United States is nearing a deal to supply Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles that can reach deep into Russia. However, Kyiv will have to wait several months as the US addresses technical issues before any deliveries can be made.»
It is noted that the inclusion of air-to-ground missiles in the defense package could be announced this autumn.
Unnamed officials believe that providing Ukraine with JASSM missiles could significantly alter the «strategic landscape» of the war. If Ukraine receives these missiles, a larger portion of Russian territory will be within the range of Ukraine’s long-range weapons.
According to the publication, military analysts suggest that the use of JASSM missiles could push Russian footholds and supply depots back by hundreds of kilometers. This would complicate Russia’s ability to support offensive operations and potentially give Ukraine a strategic advantage.
- Launching such weapons near Ukraine’s northern border would enable strikes on military targets in the Russian cities of Voronezh and Bryansk. In the south, it would allow Ukraine to target locations in occupied Crimea.
As a reminder, Poltava recently suffered a ballistic missile attack. The Russians fired two ballistic missiles at the Military Communications Institute, resulting in 180 injuries and 41 fatalities.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that both the educational institution and a neighboring hospital were hit. One of the Institute of Communications’ buildings was partially destroyed, trapping people under the rubble, though many were rescued.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that rescuers have localized the fire and are continuing to clear the debris. So far, 25 people have been rescued, 11 of them from the rubble. All victims were immediately taken to doctors for medical care.
Starting on September 4, Poltava and the surrounding region will observe three days of mourning for the victims of the Russian ballistic missile attack.
