«Medics at the front work one for three» — major of the medical service
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine put into operation the first underground stabilization point for the Armed Forces. There are plans to open a total of 20 such facilities.
Andrii Huk, a major in the medical service, head of the Medical Center of the National Guard of Ukraine, neurosurgeon, and candidate of medical sciences, discussed the benefits of these points during a live broadcast on Public Radio.
«This is a commendable idea. Given the increasing use of ballistics by the enemy, these points can help the medical forces fulfill their tasks. Our goal is to ensure that our work continues uninterrupted, despite shelling and other challenges.»
Huk notes that underground medical facilities have long been used in conjunction with the Defense Forces. However, their scale is much smaller compared to the newly opened hospital.
«Having an underground hospital is a very good decision.»
He acknowledges that building such a hospital is challenging, but feasible. With modern methods, it is now possible to set up a fully operational underground facility within 5-7 days. However, Huk did not disclose the specific details of these methods.
Logistics is crucial when creating such points. They must be equipped with everything necessary: medicines, medical equipment, and most importantly, personnel.
«Without people, these points will have no purpose.»
Despite the rapidly changing dynamics at the front, logistics forces are developing mechanisms for the quick deployment and supply of these underground points. Huk adds that these facilities should always be equipped with basic essentials, such as:
- The ABC system (ensuring airway patency, breathing, and circulation).
- Wounded soldiers can also receive blood transfusions at these points. Moreover, blood transfusions are provided even during medical evacuation. For example, the AZOV brigade conducts blood transfusions during case evacuation.
Shortage of doctors
Huk emphasizes that there is currently a severe shortage of doctors on the front lines:
«Medics are working at a ratio of one to three», — he says.
He adds that in Chasiv Yar, there are up to 20 or more wounded soldiers arriving at checkpoints daily. The enemy uses all types of weapons to target personnel.
«There are more drones than birds.»
Meanwhile, the intensity of fighting in Kurshchyna is also very high. After regrouping, the enemy is offering serious resistance. However, Huk notes that the evacuation system is well-organized. Additionally, the Main Administration of the National Guard of Ukraine, in collaboration with the AZOV brigade, has implemented targeted evacuations, allowing patients to receive specific measures based on their injuries.
Huk stresses the need for a military medical doctrine to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of medics on the front lines:
«During wartime, there should be no distinction between civilian and military medics.»
