Units of the 95th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade have broken through a section of the Russian border in the Kursk region.
This was reported by the Air Assault Forces.
“This is the second successful operation to break through the Russian border since the start of the operation in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation», — the statement said.
The soldiers also shared footage of the latest border breakthrough. The published video shows the clearing of passages through engineering barriers, the entry of airborne assault units into enemy territory. The video also features the first battles in the border area.
Operation in the Kursk region
As a reminder, the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s offensive in Russia has been ongoing since 6 August. On 12 August, Ukraine officially commented on these events for the first time. At that time, Oleksandr Syrsky reported that Ukraine had already taken control of 24 settlements in the Kursk region.
That same evening, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the purpose of the offensive in the Kursk region was to protect the Sumy region. He noted that, since the beginning of June alone, Russians from the Kursk region had fired over 2,100 times at the Sumy region.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Ukraine does not seek to occupy the Kursk region. The offensive there was necessary because Ukraine is unable to use weapons from its Western partners to drive Russian forces out of the border region.
As of 19 August, Ukraine controlled more than 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory. In addition, on 15 August, Ukraine established its first military commandant’s office in the Kursk region.
According to a report by The Sunday Times, the UK government has decided to be more transparent about the weapons provided to Ukraine during the offensive in Russia’s Kursk region. This includes the use of Challenger 2 tanks. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Defence Secretary John Healey are reportedly working to persuade key allies to provide more support for Ukraine.
On 14 August, a company of about 100 Russian soldiers surrendered in the Kursk region. This followed the successful assault by the Ukrainian army.
Yevhen Dykyi stated that the entry of Ukrainian forces into the Kursk region had shocked the entire world, including Russia.
“No one expected us to simply cross the border. And even more, that we would succeed, crossing it calmly and advancing into the depths of Russia», — he said.
