How should the world react to the attack on Kremenchuk and the other actions of Russia?
Guest: Lydia Smola, PhD and Professor of Political Sciences.
Lydia Smola: Terrorism has been known to mankind for a long time. It has evolved as an instrument of international politics. This has happened historically. Human civilization has understood that if we do not prevent this, we can simply perish. In addition to the inhumane act in Kremenchuk, Russia has legitimized terror. This act was not done by a terrorist group, but by the Russian state. This is not about using violence against the enemy, the army, but against civilians.
The use of the term «terrorist state» in relation to Russia reduces its level of responsibility for the crimes it has committed. From an emotional point of view, Russia is indeed a terrorist state, but there is no such term in international law. There is only the crime of genocide and aggression. We must work in this direction. Acts of terrorism are not only committed by individuals, but by state bodies. For this, there is the term «aggressor state.» The United States also has the term «state sponsor of terrorism.» From a political point of view, we need to be careful not to give certain advantages to Russia, which will be able to find a loophole in international law and weaken our position. It is worth accepting the opinion of lawyers in these situations.
The UN Security Council is meeting today (June 28 – ed.), so we will see how the representatives of the G7 and the international community will perceive this event. We will see how it will be interpreted in international law, and how our partners will react.
«This war does not aim to exhaust, but to annihilate»
Lydia Smola: Systematized terror is a sign of weakness and an expression of fear. On the eve of the strike on Kremenchuk, Russia defaulted. The events in Ukraine challenged perceptions and ultimately ridiculed the technological default in Russia, which is often subject to political manipulation.
This war does not aim to exhaust, but to annihilate. The Russians will exterminate everyone and only those who will not resist will be left. This is a war that will result in either us or them prevailing.
The explosion in Kremenchuk undermined the positions of pro-Russian bloggers. They are trying to save the «human face» of those who dropped missiles, «justifying» the actions of the Russian military saying that they were allegedly “disoriented.”
