Since the summer of 2022, 61 people have died in Nikopol from Russian shelling — a Hromadske correspondent
Since the beginning of the summer of 2022, 61 people have been killed by Russian shelling in Nikopol. Among them are two children—girls aged 16 and 14. Nearly 500 more people have been injured.
Hromadske Radio’s correspondent in Nikopol, Anna Tseluyko, reported this on Hromadske Radio.
“We have data from the beginning of the shelling in the summer of 2022. People have been injured with varying degrees of severity», — she said.
Additionally, almost 6,000 houses have been either destroyed or damaged, mostly private buildings and those along the coastline, Anna explained.
Regarding the water supply situation in the city, the correspondent stated:
“Overall, the water supply situation in Nikopol is stable compared to the rest of the district. We have already connected to the main water supply system built by the state, which is why we have water.»
However, interruptions still occur when Russian forces target water supply networks, leaving the city without water for several hours, Anna said.
“In general, the infrastructure situation is stable. Also, according to a government resolution, Nikopol is exempt from rolling blackouts, much like the 20-kilometre zone around the nuclear power plant. We only experience «combat» blackouts when there’s a Russian attack on the electricity or water infrastructure.»
The correspondent mentioned that the city had considered starting the school year in a mixed format, but the regional administration rejected this idea due to security concerns. As a result, classes are currently held online only.
“We had this idea, but the military administration didn’t approve it because the security situation in Nikopol remains consistently poor. Drones have now joined artillery attacks. More than 200 drones fly into the city each week, most of them hitting vehicles. There’s a growing trend of people stopping the use of cars. Some of my friends have moved their cars to other cities and now ride bicycles to get around.»
As a result, schools and kindergartens in the city remain closed for in-person learning, Anna said.
“The city has its own air raid alert system that warns of the threat of shelling. Unfortunately, it mostly sounds after the first strike. When drones are involved, however, it activates earlier», — the correspondent added.
There are fewer people on the streets due to drone attacks, Anna noted. She explained that artillery attacks can be tracked and “the area of damage can be predicted.” But with drones, it’s more difficult as they can change their trajectory and even reach the city centre. Therefore, during drone attacks, people rely on monitoring chats and, recognizing the danger, stay indoors and in shelters.
Shelling of Nikopol
As a reminder, yesterday the occupiers continued to attack the Nikopol district and the city of Nikopol until late in the evening. They used Grad multiple rocket launchers, heavy artillery, and kamikaze drones.
“One multi-storey building was damaged in Nikopol over the past day. The Russians struck it with a drone. Fortunately, there were no casualties. However, later, an 80-year-old woman was killed, and two other people were injured during the shelling of the private sector.»
Anna added that the injured are now in the hospital and their condition is stable.
According to the head of the Dnipro Military Administration, a five-storey building, 10 private houses, 3 garages, an outbuilding, and a car were damaged. A sports school also sustained damage. In addition, power lines were struck, causing dry grass to catch fire, which was extinguished by rescuers.
