The northern part of Donetsk Region, home to around 260,000 residents, is facing significant water supply issues due to heavy Russian shelling, as reported by Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration.

  • The cities of Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, and nearby areas are experiencing water shortages. Two critical facilities of the Donbass Water Company were heavily damaged on 28 September. Filashkin emphasized that the damage is so severe that there is no technical capability to restore the equipment.
  • Efforts are being made by the Regional Military Administration and local authorities to find alternative water supply solutions. For now, industrial water is being temporarily sourced from the river Donbass water intake.

Previously, a modular filtration plant that supplied water to Pokrovsk was shut down due to the ongoing fighting, and resuming its operation is currently impossible. Filashkin reiterated his call for civilians to evacuate, describing it as the only safe option given the dire circumstances.

Despite the challenges, local authorities have taken steps to alleviate the water crisis. They have drilled 75 public wells in the Pokrovsk community and 250 near high-rise buildings, funded by local budgets and condominiums. Drinking water is being delivered, and 8 reverse osmosis plants have been installed to provide free water to residents. Meanwhile, the water supply situation in the nearby town of Rodynske continues to be addressed.
