The Russian army needs to show some kind of «victory», and may try to seize Kyiv, but everything will depend on how events develop in eastern Ukraine.

Alina Frolova, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Center for Defense Strategies, spoke about this on Hromadske Radio.

According to Frolova, the Russian military will simultaneously try to advance in the south and east to close these regions:

«The Russian army is regrouping to go on the offensive. Experts are not sure what kind of offensive it will be, there are many options. What they will try to do is expand the occupation zone to the east and south. The south is important for them in terms of access to the Black Sea and the blockade of trade routes. The East is symbolic, as they proclaimed. «

According to the deputy head of the Center for Defense Strategies, if the Russian forces fail to implement their plans, they will again march on Kyiv.

“They need to show some kind of «victory». And they will try to do so. Developments in the east will determine the offensive. After all, their resources are not limitless and they have realized that they do not have enough operational and logistical resources to fight on many fronts,” Frolova said.

The Ministry of Defense also reported that a possible resumption of Russia’s offensive in Kyiv would depend on hostilities in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko echoed these sentiments, saying that Russian troops could still go to the capital. Therefore, according to Klitschko, the capital must continue to be ready for defense.

Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi believes that it is too early to say that Ukraine has finally won the battle for Kyiv.
