The current security situation in Mykolaiv Oblast was discussed with Yuliya Vinnyk, a correspondent for «Hromadske Radio.»

Yuliya Vinnyk: 24 rockets hit Mykolaiv on July 12. It was one of the most intense periods of shelling in recent months. People are already used to daily shelling, but when there are so many, it still becomes scary. A lot has been damaged — two hospitals, a school, high-rise buildings, and private estates. The consequences are quite colossal. Mykolaiv is being shelled from the Kherson region.

The situation in the city

Yulia Vinnyk: The water supply has been restored and there is water in Mykolaiv. Sometimes something breaks, but in general, there are no serious problems. Locals say that the water has a salty taste because it is supplied from the Dnipro-Buzka estuary.

In general, the atmosphere in Mykolaiv is combative. There are many people on the streets. They respond to air raid sirens and hide in shelters. People are quite optimistic and although shelling is daily and of different scales, shops, cafes, and restaurants still operate in the city. Mykolaiv is trying to live. This is how the city shows the occupiers that people are not intimidated. Some of the population is even returning and the reasons for it vary. In-person learning is still not being discussed. Recently, one of the deputy mayors announced that from September 1 in the Mykolaiv Region, online learning will be held.

  • Since the beginning of Russia’s aggression, more than 400 educational institutions have been affected in Mykolaiv Oblast.

Is it possible to save the crop?

Yuliya Vinnyk: In the last week, the Russians fired 2 or 3 times in a targeted manner in the fields of the Mykolaiv Oblast. In one community alone, 4 hectares were burned. The State Emergency Service promptly responds to such calls and extinguishes them quickly. Fortunately, parts of the harvest can be saved. Vitaly Kim introduced a decision to ease the conditions of grain transportation. For example, the temperature regulation and the time limit for trucks transporting grain was removed. Trucks can move freely despite the curfew. All this is done to save the harvest as much as possible.
