The Ukrainian film «20 Days in Mariupol» has achieved an Academy Award nomination, as revealed during the announcement of the nominees. The documentary has been nominated in the Documentary Feature Film category for Best Documentary Feature Film, marking a significant milestone as the first Ukrainian film since independence to receive an Oscar nomination.
Directed by Mstyslav Chernov, a war correspondent, «20 Days in Mariupol» captures the experiences of Chernov and his colleague Yevhen Malolhetka, who were the last civilian journalists to remain in Mariupol during the blockade by Russian occupiers in March 2022. The documentary weaves together footage from the first month of the full-scale invasion.
In 2023, the film earned the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and the top prize at the Docudays UA festival.
