A massive attack on Ukraine: Air defence forces destroy 59 out of 76 air targets

On the night of May 8, Russian troops launched an attack on Ukraine, deploying 55 missiles of various types and 21 attack drones. The Air defence forces successfully destroyed 59 enemy air targets.

This information was disclosed by Mykola Oleshchuk, Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

«On the night of May 8, the Russian occupants executed a coordinated assault employing missiles of diverse types and attack drones. In total, the adversary employed 76 means of air attack, comprising 55 missiles and 21 attack drones», — he stated.

The following munitions were fired by the occupants towards Ukraine:

  • 1 X-47M2 Kinzhal aerial ballistic missile (launched from the Tambov region of Russia);
  • 2 Iskander-M ballistic missiles (from the territory of Crimea);
  • 4 Kalibr cruise missiles (from the Black Sea);
  • 45 X-101/X-555 cruise missiles from Tu-95 MS strategic aircraft (launching from the Saratov region of the Russian Federation and the Caspian Sea);
  • 1 Iskander-K cruise missile (from Crimea);
  • 2 X-59/X-69 guided missiles (from the occupied Zaporizhzhia region);
  • 21 Shahed-131/136 strike UAVs (from Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Kursk region of the Russian Federation).

The air defense forces successfully intercepted 33 X-101/X-555 cruise missiles, four Kalibr cruise missiles, two X-59/X-69 guided missiles, and 20 Shaheds.

«Fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missile troops of the Air Force, mobile firing groups, and electronic warfare units of the Ukrainian Defence Forces are engaged in repelling the enemy air attack», — Oleshchuk concluded.

As previously reported, on the night of May 8, the enemy targeted electricity generation and transmission facilities in six regions: Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Vinnytsia. Equipment at three DTEK thermal power plants suffered severe damage.
