This year the death rate in Ukraine is three times higher than the birth rate — Opendatabot
In the first half of 2024, 87,655 children were born in Ukraine, and 250,972 people died. The highest number of both newborns and deaths was in the Dnipro region and Kyiv.
This is evidenced by Opendatabot data.
During the same period in 2021, before the full-scale war, 132,595 children were born in Ukraine. Now this figure is almost half as much.
Kyiv registered the highest number of newborns – 9,695, followed by Lviv region – 7,923, and Dnipro region – 6,962.
The lowest number of babies were born in the frontline regions – 221 in Kherson and 702 in Donetsk. In the Luhansk region, not a single baby has been registered in six months.
Currently, there are three deaths for every newborn in Ukraine. In 2018-2020, there were two deaths per child. This indicator is one of the key indicators of the demographic crisis.
The highest number of deaths was registered in Dnipropetrovska oblast – 26,374, Kharkiv oblast – 17,999, and Kyiv – 17,449. The lowest numbers were recorded in the frontline Kherson region – 2,334, Donetsk region – 5,753, and Chernivtsi region – 5,422.
