EU must prepare for the fact that there will be no gas from russia, it is worth reorienting to other sources – political scientist

Bankova did not receive an appeal from congresswoman Victoria Spartz regarding Yermak, Canada gave Germany a turbine for a gas turbine that was under sanctions.

We spoke about it with Petr Oleschuk, a political scientist.

Petro Oleschuk: The addressee of Victoria Spartz’s appeal is not the Ukrainian authorities. The request is strange, there are many such provisions that are difficult to answer. I am not convinced that these remarks can be adequately answered. I do not think that any reaction from Bankova is necessary here. If a response is required, it must be coordinated with the White House.

One must be balanced in order not to immerse all this in American domestic politics.

If we talk about the necessity of appointing the leadership of anti-corruption bodies, I have no doubts about the necessity of solving this issue. This is one of the conditions for the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. However, other questions from the congresswoman’s appeal remain. It feels like they were collected on social media conspiracy forums.

Can Russia not resume the work of «Nord Stream-1»?

Petro Oleschuk: We must be ready for this because Russia is unpredictable. It can stop all this at any moment. Russia expects to use blackmail with gas to achieve concessions on the issue of support for Ukraine. There is only one adequate strategy: to prepare for the fact that there will be no gas from Russia in Europe and somehow, if possible, reorient to other sources.

For many years, Ukraine warned the Europeans that the Russian Federation uses gas as a weapon. No one wanted to hear it. They said: «This is business, not politics.»

Why did Canada decide to bring back the gas turbine?

Canada gave Germany a sub-sanctioned gas turbine. The Germans can hope that Nord Stream-1 will resume its work after scheduled repairs. Kyiv asked Canada not to do this because it is a violation of sanctions.

Petro Oleschuk: In Germany, they probably did not expect that the situation would develop like this. This is a bad precedent because this way, Russia is shown that if you push well, vis-à-vis and into a hopeless situation, you can force the other side to make concessions. The Russian Federation will accept this: it is necessary to exert more pressure, and carry out terrorist activities, in order to achieve results.

However, this is not the end of the world and not something that will lead to radical change.
